The Last Jedi wasn’t a good film. Let me tell you why:

• The plot is filmsy: Even without the few plot holes and hand waving of logic, it’s feels like this was a second or third draft rather than a final product.
• The characters are somehow worse: Last Jedi furthers the tradition of poor characterization started in Force Awakens by keeping Rey overpowered, making Finn pointless, giving no backstory to Snoke, and ruining nearly everything about Luke’s character.
• Everyone’s a comedian: Taking a note from Marvel, Disney decided forgo fixing the issues above to instead dedicated that time to have characters tell jokes, make quips, be a smartass or do visual gags. It’s almost insulting how cheap they’ll go for laughs.

The director and writer, Rian Johnson, feels like he deliberately went out of his way to flip the expectations of the audience at certain moments just to fool them, not caring if it made sense in terms of story or character.

If I really dig down, I can at least mention a few good things about the film: Kylo Ren has sort of an interesting arc going for him (I cannot believe I’m saying the whiny emo is the best character so far), the environmental and set design is great, visuals are appealing, and the music…sounds like it was reused from TFA but even reused John Williams music is still top notch.

But as you walk away from the theater, reflecting back, you realize how much of a confused mess it was: It didn’t know what direction it wanted to take, how to answer the previous film’s questions, and why this is all happening to begin with. What’s worse, it retroactively ruins the character developments and progresses made in the original trilogy and as a result, makes the viewer not care about what will happen in this trilogy’s end, if you didn’t already.

I couldn’t even recommend this for a cheaper matinee showing. Only if some unfortunate patron paid for your ticket would I say it’d be worth it then, but even still…

That being said, I can’t go further in depth without revealing spoilers so I’ll conclude by saying it surprises me that this is an official Star Wars film because it comes off more like a fan film. We see familiar environments, designs, and items but the new characters don’t mesh with those things at all. And it’s not because they “look different”, it’s because they’re poorly written, sorry excuses for characters; we don’t know who these people are and this is the second movie in the series! I don’t even blame the newcomers either because Luke, Han and even Leia are just as lousy in these movies.

“It’s time for these movies to end…”

Something seriously went wrong while making these movies and it happened way before the camera started rolling.
